How can a young woman travel safely in India without having set destinations or a travel partner?

My main goals are to discover the differences in culture, and learn about the traditional drumming and dancing (possibly participating if I am welcomed). I am hoping for a culturally enlightening and fulfilling adventure, but am afraid that in my ignorance I will make stupid mistakes, risking my safety.
